I Am From…

Posted by: Dyanein Memes

This meme originated with Floyd There are instructions on his page, too! Give it a try, it’s harder & more rewarding than it looks.

—————————————————

I am from construction paper, Elmer’s Glue and Nursery School,
from kick-the-can, the Dooma chair and baseball.

I am from the wood floors, bay windows, sweeping staircases, elegant, Victorian, a kitchen explosion of 70s flowers and butter yellow, freshly cut grass and hot asphalt assaulting my nose.

I am from the ferns, columbines and the Rocky Mountains,
the chives, daffodils and warm earth beneath my fingers, digging in with a spoon.

I am from gifts on Christmas Eve and big, soft breasts,
from Gail who drank herself to death and The Hardens and
The Days, volatile blends of Celt & Cherokee.

I am from the irreverant humor and cackling laughter,
from slinging cowpies and being tickled until I screamed,
from my stars and garters and Aunt Hattie’s hair.

I am from Jesus loves you and wait until your father gets home.

I am from being dunked not sprinkled, revival that lasted a week, potluck dinners, the blood of the lamb, fire and brimstone. I am from the sea, the sky and the earth, from stars and deer. I am from candles and incense, flowers and moon cakes.

I am from Utah & Colorado, Belfast & Glasgow, potato salad made with mayo & not too much mustard and strawberry shortcake layered in a bowl and not on sponge cake.

From a grandfather who cared more about booze than his family,
my father who repaired bombers in Korea, and my mother who grew up unloved,
lonely and wanting to make her own way in the world.

I am from jam-packed photo albums, lovingly crafted scrapbooks and metal edged frames on an antique chest. I am from knick-knacks, report cards and childish Mothers’ Day cards, from badly painted ceramics, cross-stitched sayings and drawings. I am from memories, hopes, dreams and wishes, each too precious not to save.

I am from them, I am from me.

What you do is take the following list of books (the top 106 marked most often as “unread” by LibraryThing’s users). Bold the ones you’ve read, italicize the ones you started but couldn’t finish, strike through the ones you really sort of hated, put an asterisk next to the ones you’ve read more than once, and underline the ones on your own personal To Be Read list.

Got it? Alrighty then.

Time Travel Tuesday

Time to share your first job experience…
What was your first job experience? I had a paper route, I shared the money with my mom, because she had to drive me around to deliver the papers, because I was only 14 or 15. It was in a place in Pueblo, Colorado known as “Salt Creek” and it was somewhat slum-like in places. In others there were beautiful, expensive homes, but that was an exception.
Do you remember the first paycheck, starting salary? I made whatever was left after I paid my paper bill which I then split with my mom. Some months that wasn’t very much, since I had a hard time getting people to pay & would have to get my district manager out there to help me collect. I don’t really remember getting paid the first time, but I’m sure I liked it.
Do you remember your first boss, coworkers? The only one I knew was my district manage, I didn’t have any co-workers, other than my mom.
What was your favorite task/least favorite task? Collecting. I’d go out on the first of every month to collect what was owed to me for the previous month. People would look me straight in the eye, lie to me & say they didn’t have any money & tell me to come back the 1st (It WAS the 1st). So, on the 6th, I’d go out with my DM & he’d collect it. They always had the money for him.
How did that job end? I quit, it became too much of a hassle to collect every month. I lasted for about a year.

This week’s Monday Madness:

1. Do you have children in school? Yes, just one though, the rest are out. My daughter is a high school senior.
2. Are YOU currently in school (any level)? No.
3. Did you (or your children) attend a public or private school? I attended public school. My kids attended public, then we home schooled for 4 years and they went back to public for high school.
4. As far as formal education, what level have you completed? I got my GED.
5. Do you, or did you have loans out for your (or your children’s) education? No.
6. What are your thoughts on the cost of tuition for colleges and universities? I think its fairly outrageous. I can’t afford to send any of my kids to college, they’re on their own, which is pretty sad.
